WELCOME

Welcome to the 60th Annual Juried Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc.

This 60th Annual Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America was held at the Chinese American Museum DC in Washington DC on 16th Street about 4 blocks north of the White House. It is the first time the Society has chosen to share its annual exhibition on the Internet following a gallery exhibit. The Society wants to enable artists and art lovers from around the world to enjoy the wonderful artwork by our talented members. In the Museum we were given two floors of the town house and were able to show 101 painting and 19 calligraphy pieces of artwork selected from 188 entries by 88 artists.

Our goal in using the Internet is to expose more people to this amazing art form and increase the awareness and appreciation of the art of sumi-e in the United States and around the world. The Society is a non-profit educational organization established in 1963 and focused on encouraging the appreciation of East Asian Brush Painting styles and techniques, serving as a cultural bridge between East and West and furnishing information to all persons who wish to learn about this art. Through art we can establish genuine friendship and understanding that will span our diverse backgrounds and bring us into community.

If you are not yet a member of the Sumi-e Society of America, I invite you to visit http://sumiesociety.org to learn about us and join our community.

So many people have worked hard to bring this exhibition to you – our Co-Chairs, Carole Yee and Carla Jaranson, their committee Mei Lih Chiang, Robin Frosh, Steve Grant, Patricia Gustafson, Anna Hamman, Mark Malecki, Frederica Marshall, Mary Ann Matika, Linda Mulhauser, Amy Li-Wen Quach, Suzanne Tolstoy, Carol Waite and Carol Wiggins. Our many thanks go to the talented artists whose work is shown here, our amazing judge, Kan Kit-Keung, the dedication of many members and the generous contributions of our supporters. My genuine appreciation and gratitude goes to you all.
